Pack Your Bags

Naledi broke up with Bonani...

"Hey you, what are you doing here?" A pleasantly surprised Bonani asked his older sister.

Cebisa had just walked inside T-Boz Tavern, after many months of absence.

The place was semi packed with only a few regulars around.

Bonani couldn't hide his sheer joy as he ran around the front of the counter to hug her. They also hadn't spoken to each other in a while.

"I was in the neighbourbood," she joked. "I thought I'd pop in."

"Yeah right. This neighbourhood!"

She chuckled softly. "Is there somewhere we can talk? I know you're busy. I promise not to keep you long."

"Uhh … okay," Bonani responded, searching for someone. "I need to get Sindile quickly. He's the help ... oh there he is."

Bonani whistled, getting his attention. He pointed to the bar, and then to his watch.

Sindile quickly dropped his broom and trotted over to the bar, to serve.

Bonani followed his sister outside. It was cold, and windy.

He wondered what she wanted - hoping for a pleasant surprise. His mind raced.

They stood a few steps from the entrance, with shivering hands in their pockets.

A few drunks hung around by the braai area, warming themselves up by the fire.

"So what’s going on, Sis?" He asked, smiling warmly at her.

"This isn't a social visit, Bonani.”

He’d seen that serious face many times before. It wasn’t good.

“Why, what’s going on?”

“I want you to tell me about Peter. What am I missing?"

Bonani looked around, suspiciously.

"You see, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Why do you look around when I mention Peter’s name? What are you scared of?"

"I'm not sure what you're asking me, Cebz."

"Let me make it simple: What don't I know about my husband? I want you to tell me everything there is to know about Peter. And don’t sugarcoat it."

Bonani panicked a tad, rubbing his palms. "Have you had this conversation with Peter?"

"No, I'm having it with you. Quit beating around the bush, please."

"I don't know what to tell you, Cebz."

"So you don't want to tell me? Your own sister!"

"No ... I mean, yes ... I want to help you ..."

"Then speak."

"Wait, before we have this chat. What's caused all of this? Why are you suspicious, all of a sudden?" Are you two fighting?”

“That doesn’t concern you. But if you must know, I suspect he’s cheating. He comes home late and smells of perfume sometimes. Not only that, but people are scared of him. Everyone is frightened at the mere mention of his name. I wanna know why?”

“But he treats you like gold. You’re in love. Why do you care about how he treats other people?”

“Because it means he’s being fake to me. If he’s an absolute gentleman around me, and a monster everywhere else – that means Peter is a two faced hypocrite.”

Bonani looked around again, cautious. “Don’t say things like that out loud, please.”

“Peter is a two-faced hypocrite, Peter is a two faced hypocrite, Peter is a two faced hypocrite. What’s gonna happen to me? Will he gun me down, or something?”

“Cebz, this is his tavern. You never know who’s listening. People look out for the boss.”

“Bonani, what do you know about Peter. Will you tell me or not?”

He started pacing up and down, fidgeting. Cebz was putting him in a really tight spot. “What do you want me to say?”

“The truth! All I want is the truth! Okay let me make it easy for you: Does Peter have affairs outside of our marriage? And does he kill people?”

Bonani scratched his head intensely – dreading the consequences of his answers.

“Just be honest, dude. I can take it. Is he...?” Cebz stood bold, psyching herself up for the answer.

With much hesitation, Bonani nodded.

Meanwhile , hours later …

It was late in the evening. Bonani had just come back from a tiring workday. He’d had an awful day, with his sister as the cherry on top.

He shot straight for Spox's bedroom, hoping she was still up, as he knocked.

"Come in," Spox responded in a soft voice.

They couldn't wake the baby up.

Bonani opened up, and tip toed inside. "Baby sleeping?" He whispered.

Spox nodded, wondering what the matter was.

He sat on the edge of the bed, with a dry plastic smile on him.

Something was definitely the matter, Spox thought, sitting up now and covering herself with a morning gown. "Is everything cool?" She asked.

Little Khanya slept soundly beside her mom, with a pink fluffy kiddies blanket over her.

"It's all good - well kinda," he responded, coldly.

"What d'you mean?"

How would he phrase it? He stuttered. "Spox, I'm beefing with Naledi, hectically. It's ... it's really getting bad. And huh ... it didn't help that ... that you told her about our chats."

"I'm so sorry, Bonani, but your girlfriend was bullying me, bruh. She was on some 'I've gotta get my ass outta here' crusade, or else ... She kept waving her fingers at me, and stuff. What should’ve I done?"

Bonani gave the same weird smile again. "Maybe we should talk about that."

"Excuse me?"

"Listen ... I don't wanna choose between you or Naledi, but it doesn't look like I have a choice now, y’know."

An uncomfortable chill went through Spox. "What are you saying?"

"I think you should ... maybe you should speak to your sister, about ... moving back in with her."

Spox's jaw dropped. This wasn't happening.

"I could even speak to her for you, if you want."

Siphokazi's heart raced. Her temperature rose. She suddenly felt thirsty. "I don't believe I'm hearing this."

"I'm so so sorry, Spox. This thing ... us ... it's coming between my relationship. I thought I could manage it, but it’s obviously not happening.”

"But there is no, 'us', dude. You're with Naledi, and I'm cool with it. Me and you are a non-issue. I may as well be a guy, or a relative. I’m just living here with my child. You’re dating Naledi. These are completely different scenarios.”

"I know, but we did, kiss."

"It meant nothing - not to me at least." Spox said it with a straight face. This was war. “We just got caught up in the moment, dude. You don’t like me like that, romantically. And I don’t like you like that. C’mon bro!”

“Yeah, I know, but Naledi doesn’t see it like that. We’ve practically broken up, as a consequence. Please don’t make this harder than it has to be.”

A tear fell from Spox’s eye, down her cheek. She quickly wiped it off. “Bonani, I accept that you’re with Naledi. I won’t hit on you, or try to break ya’ll up. She’s your chick and I respect that …”

"I know, but I have to ask you to pack your things, anyway, please. I've given it a lot of thought. It's the only way."

Anger engulfed Spox abruptly. A blood vein protruded from the side of her face. She hated Naledi with all her heart. She wanted to rip Naledi's heart out, and feed it to her.  "Okay, Bonani. It's your house. You're the boss. I’ll pack my things tomorrow."

Bonani felt terrible as he stood up. "I'm so sorry, Siphokazi."

Spox turned around, facing the opposite side of the room. She didn't want him to see her cry.

Bonani walked out. He genuinely felt terrible about it.

Spox sat back up, turning to her child now.

She had a dangerous look on her as she wiped her tears off.
